New American Paintings Remembers Ivan Karp

Legendary New York art dealer, Ivan Karp, has passed away at age 86. Ivan has the distinction of being the only gallerist to ever juror an edition of New American Paintings – all other jurors have been curators. He did so in early 1997, and the result was Issue #10, which is the only issue we ever published that was solely dedicated to New York City (the city subsequently became a part of our annual Northeast issue). Ivan is also the only juror that I have sat with through the entire jurying process; it was a long, cigar-smoke filled afternoon in the offices of his SOHO-based gallery, O.K. Harris Works of Art, that I will never forget.

Gallerist at Home: Catlin Moore

Catlin Moore, the Director of the contemporary Mark Moore Gallery and co-Director of 5790projects, is stylish, youthful and a definite force to be reckoned with.  Though she cites her collection as being “in its infancy” (especially compared to her father gallery-owner and namesake Mark Moore), her art and artifice at home make me drool.  An established arts writer and LA gallerist, Catlin has created a respite at home, reflecting a space where contemporary art browses with library-esque bookshelves, curiosity cabinets, and a tangible life of its own.

Must-See Paintings Shows: November

We reviewed upcoming November exhibitions at close to 300 commercial galleries from throughout the United States to compile this list. Once again, it is another extraordinarily strong month for the medium of painting. Highlights include the feverishly painted work of Alison Schulnik at Zieher Smith, Nathan Hylden’s complex meditations on the studio at Richard Telles, and Llyn Foulkes idiosyncratic landscapes at Andrea Rosen. - Must-See November painting shows after the jump!

Must-See Paintings Show: September

The art world comes alive again in September, as galleries reopen and collectors return from far flung locations. We reviewed upcoming September exhibitions at more than 400 galleries around the country, and there will be a lot of painting on view.

As is typical, many galleries are bringing out the big guns for the new season - from Agnes Martin at The Pace Gallery in New York to a well structured survey of Bay Area figurative painter, Nathan Oliveira, at John Berggruen Gallery in San Francisco. Among the shows opening by emerging artists, it is hard to ignore the trend towards abstract painting that has swept over the art world.
