Holly Coulis’ Fruits and Florals at Cherry and Martin

Walking into Holly Coulis’ solo show at Cherry and Martin, I was surprised to see a majority of large, boldly imagined paintings of flowers, fruits, and vegetable still lifes interspersed with and handful of blurred, dulled landscapes. - Ellen Caldwell, Los Angeles Contributor

The Limitless Possibilities of Firelei Báez at the Richard Heller Gallery

Firelei Báez’ solo show “Not Even Unalterable Limitations” at the Richard Heller Gallery is saturated with dense color and rich content.  While at her show, I repeatedly heard the muffled sound of visitors oohing and aahing their awe and approval from the gallery’s large entryway, before even fully stepping inside.

Fact, Fiction, and Friction: Frohawk Two Feathers

During a time when fiction dances eerily with fact, it feels appropriate to look to a contemporary artist from my generation who is using acrylics, tea-dyed paper, and a variety of mediums to blur, illuminate, disguise, and play with these lines.  I first saw Frohawk Two Feathers’ (NAP #73) work at Taylor De Cordoba in 2006 and have followed him and his empire literally through many gallery and museum openings, and figuratively through 100’s of years, numerous battles, wars, and revolutions.  Lives have been lost, prisoners have been taken, but Frohawk always comes out on top.

Piles and Textiles: Studio Visit with Erin Payne

Erin Payne (NAP #93) paints what she terms “piles” – they are piles of jumbled and indefinable fabric and scattered memories.  Upon first glance, they reminded me of many fond piles from my own life: blankets abandoned from a childhood fort, wet and sandy towels left at the beach, and the ever-growing laundry that accumulate magically by week’s end.  I also saw them as shells of things that once were, but were now abandoned and I was excited to learn more about her process and inspiration. -Ellen C.
