FIAC PARIS 2018: Publisher Steven Zevitas Selects His Favorite Paintings

 

FIAC (Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain) returns to the Grand Palais for it's 45th edition this week.  The modern/contemporary art fair welcomes galleries from 25 different countries to participate in this year's iteration.  New American Paintings Publisher and Editor in Chief, Steven Zevitas, lets us know which works are on his radar and which works you just can't miss:

A Conversation: Cordy Ryman

I recently saw my first Ryman pieces in person at the Dallas Art Fair. Dodge Gallery had a piece made of 2 x 4’s, painted and hanging on the wall. There was also a corner piece comprised of stacked 2x4’s painted with soft, shiny colors. Upon closer inspection of the corner piece I noticed hand writing that indicated some sort of possible measurement. I couldn’t tell because Ryman had cut the wood off before the information could be fully retained.  But the markings were just enough to show his hand.

I Heart KC Art

That's right, there is great art in Kansas City. Let me start by saying that I am no stranger to the region. I grew up in Kansas (leaving off the "City" on purpose, for those sticklers for geography), and since leaving it behind for college 15 years ago, a lot has changed. For example, the suburbs have grown beyond belief, the downtown area is no longer a place you go to get shot, and you can eat excellent food that isn't BBQ. Although I don't know why you would do the latter. But more importantly to you, a reader of this blog and I assume an art lover, KC has a robust and continually growing art scene. I only got a taste during my recent visit, but figured there was more than enough to share.

Composing and Compositing for Reactions: Cordy Ryman

Scraps and discarded wood become remarkable, contemplative creations in Cordy Ryman's hands. His style bears some influence of dad Robert—connoisseur of white tones and alchemist with mounting implements—but Cordy is more likely to coat his second- or thirdhand lumber with dazzlingly colorful paint. Or he'll leave the wood bare to highlight its recycled history. Viewing Ryman's work, his relief-like paintings and painterly sculptures, in his second solo exhibition at Lora Reynolds Gallery is best done up close and personal. — Brian Fee, Austin contributor
