“Excavating Abstraction”: Zak Prekop at Harris Lieberman
The intense, ostensibly minimalist yet beguilingly layered and process-composed paintings by young Brooklyn-based Zak Prekop unveil themselves like a Jorge Luis Borges plot device. I spent a leisurely while in front of and angled toward his human-scale canvases filling Harris Lieberman Gallery, playing out different scenarios in my head as to just how he created them. Their plain titles give away few secrets, but their respective compositions and surface effects are irresistible to inquisitive eyes. - Brian Fee, Austin Contributor

Creative Collagist: Chris Martin
There are several protocols to bear in mind before experiencing a Chris Martin exhibition. Take your preconceived notions of mixed-media painting and color combinations and chuck them out the window. Martin’s bold color choices are exceeded only by the media itself receiving the paint, which could be “just” canvas or an entire Oriental rug to the tabloid newspapers appearing here, his third solo show at Mitchell-Innes & Nash. The Physicality of Place: Daniel Heidkamp at Champion
Daniel Heidkamp's solo exhibition at Champion (on view through February 25th) in Austin, TX highlights his strengths as a painter. I write this with the embedded pun fully in mind. He is a master of capturing light—whether tempering a fireplace's glow into this overall pulsing warmth or emblazoning a backyard with patterned tree-limb shadows. Heidkamp's light is an emotive presence throughout the excellently titled Glow Drops At The Chill Spot. - Read more by Austin contributor, Brian Fee, after the jump!

Heart to Art: Lora Reynolds of Lora Reynolds Gallery (PART ONE)
Imagine my thrill as a seasoned New York art-goer thrust back into the unfamiliar Texas Hill Country this summer (I graduated from University of Texas at Austin but hadn't visited the city but once since then), going totally off a strong recommendation from Big Apple friends to visit Lora Reynolds Gallery. Imagine that joy when stumbling into a clean, well-lit white-box, with its raw concrete floor and huge windows, which just happened to be showing former Armory Show artist Susan Collis (So it goes, May 14-July 16, 2011).

The Art Newspaper at Art Basel Miami Beach
Painting is so hot right now. An abundance of Gerhard Richter's and Sigmar Polke's around Art Basel Miami isn't a fluke. Richter is subject of the documentary Gerhard Richter Painting, which had its American premiere here last evening, plus saw career-high bids for Abstracks Bild and other mind-melting paintings at Sotheby's NY last month. Meanwhile his countryman Polke, who passed away last year, set a record at Sotheby's London several months earlier for his '67 work Jungle. Just don't make the mistake of dubbing framed artwork "conservative": painting can be just as lyrical, energetic, experimental, or shocking as its three-dimensional kindred.

Walton Ford: Primal Instincts and Pop Culture
Walton Ford's reputation for enormous (specifically life-sized) watercolors of animals executed in the highly illustrative, realistic vein of ornithologist-artist John James Audubon precedes him. I have expectations when approaching a new Ford exhibition: the works will be large; they will be fully realized; and there will exist some disarray, some violence that offsets the animals' handsome portraiture. I've followed Ford's work since 2005 and have seen his deft folding of dissent beneath a naturalistic veil, like Le Jardin's rugged bison fighting off a pack of chicly groomed wolves on a manicured garden.
