In my series, Finding the Light, painting is a time-based medium. It is a strategy of searching for meaning and hope in the rituals and memories of my daily life. Through the practice of painting, I examine and maintain connections to my chosen family even when space and time keep us apart.
The process of constructing these paintings involves the collection and collaging of pictorial references from videos, photographs, and my own memory, all of which have varying degrees of clarity. Some of the scenes for these references are reenacted or staged, while others are captured as they happen; yet, none of the images ever represent the feeling of the moment as I remember it. By drawing, painting, and writing narratives, I excavate these often blurred, dim, or dull images to find the light that is already there.
