My landscapes that are based on photographs of the western United States explore the potential of flattening and merging materials. Images of cliffs, canyons, and quarries are soft, unsaturated, and flat, with cutouts revealing a layer of solid color. The natural ledges and pools in the photographs cede to simplified geographic forms. While the photographic elements of the work examine balance and space within a flattened picture plane, the areas of color nod to mapping, Photoshop masking techniques, and collage.
