Manik Raj Nakra
My paintings, drawings, and installations address the ancient
world as if was my own. A world of teeming jungles where fourheaded
leopards perch on ruins and silver-toothed monkeys
pray for our salvation. My art offers a contemporary lens onto
colonial anachronisms, Indian iconography, artifacts from
early civilizations, and ceremonial myths and folklore to explore
themes such as survival, creation, lust, and self-doubt. These
themes, handled with wild colors and stark compositions,
illuminate the historically rooted yet contemporarily relevant
narratives on power, paranoia, and the dreams and the desires
of my time and place.
