Karen deClouet
My work is derived from the connection we have with places that
are familiar to us. I build my pieces from a repetition of loosely
ordered linear marks combined with fluid ones. Through this
repetition, a foundational space is created. Eventually, this space
begins to reference landscapes that I am personally connected to,
and becomes a foundation related to my past.
I often combine elements from various places. These have
included the unique settlement pattern found in my native home
of South Louisiana, the architectural structures surrounding
my father’s home in northeastern Ohio, and the qualities of the
desert in my current residence in Arizona. My work allows me
to explore and combine these landscapes, while new imagery
surfaces from the blending of process and place.
