John Swanger
I make series of abstract, process-based paintings, objects, and
works on paper. I’ve long had an interest in exploring the forms,
materials, and meanings of abstraction. Most of my recent series
derive from simple (often overlooked) actions. These include
crumpling paper, walking through puddles, and scattering
objects. From this kind of starting point, I make parameters for the
work, and improvise within them. I’m interested in the elemental
qualities of materials and the visual. Silence, ritual, and empty
space, along with sameness and difference, figure prominently in
my work.
