Henry Morales
As a first-generation Guatemalan American, my upbringing and culture inspire me to explore themes of labor, immigration, identity, hybridity, and place. I mix both familiar and non-traditional materials to create works that are visually and conceptually engaging. Investigating the impact of migration and assimilation while still holding ties to another land, my works depict and celebrate the lived experiences of my family and community. I delve deep into the significance of being a child of immigrants by blending both my American and Guatemalan identities in a way that honors the lives of my family and my personal history, heritage, and ancestral past.
Ultimately, my artistic practice brings visibility to those who are often marginalized. Through documenting and highlighting their personal narratives and presenting their plight in an earnest and truthful manner, I aim to foster a sense of community for people coming from similar upbringings and cultural backgrounds to those of my own.
