Artist Statement
Devin B. Johnson works within the multidisciplinary language
of painting, sculpture, installation, and sound. His work is based
on the decoding and reassembling of sociocultural structures.
As Johnson searches for a way to deconstruct and reclaim
motifs and symbols, he uses found imagery and material to
reformat the identifiers that are indicative of the Black aesthetic.
Johnson is interested in dilapidated exterior surfaces found in
the urban landscape. They provide a reminder of a memory and
how it is reshaped when recalled. These tactile moments in
the landscape are often negotiated within Johnson’s paintings
and mixed-media collages. The paintings are worked with a
thoughtful process, but Johnson allows room for cathartic
play with his intuitive mark-making. The process guides these
paintings to operate in the language of abstract frescos.
