My eye catches a flower growing on the path and as I lean down to get a closer look, I am overcome with the profound feeling of awe. This recognition of copresence is simple but wonderful, and my practice endeavors to capture such wonder within the viewing experience.
Flora, whether native, naturalized, or invasive, carries with it a history of cause and effect—just like those who encounter it. I am conceptually interested in horizontal, communal human-to-nature dynamics through studying the prairie ecoregion. By painting abstracted botanical structures that bend the rules of physics and explore metaphysical theory, the work utilizes organic beauty as an entry point to dig into the fertile soil of interdependence. My practice is the process of highlighting functional parallels between plant biology and human ecology. It is the visual synthesis of my ever-developing understanding of life, reciprocity, and social responsibility.
