Must See Paintings Shows: January
Happy New Year to all of our readers. I am excited to present you with our first Must See list of the year. I am constantly getting feedback about the large number of shows that make it on the list each month from galleries located in New York City. There is no bias for the Big Apple, there are just that many exhibitions of note every month. This month, you will notice a large number from other parts of the country, including Denver, Seattle, and Kansas City. As always, we want to know who you feel should be on the list, so please give us your comments and recommendations. I try to be extremely thorough with this monthly review, but, needless to say, I am not aware of everything happening out there.

Pacific Coast Issue #97 Sneak Peak!
The 2011 Pacific Coast Issue, #97, is now hitting newsstands across the US. It is expected to ship to subscribers in the next 1 to 2 weeks, so keep an eye out. The juror for this much-anticipated issue was Anne Ellegood, Senior Curator, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA.
In her essay, Ellegood notes that, "Painting is a surface for imagination. This is abundantly evident in the submissions I reviewed for this edition of New American Paintings. While the works presented in the following pages are notably eclectic, one striking correspondence among the artists is their belief that painting can offer us insights into our world..." -- View a list of all featured artists and see a few more sneak peaks after the jump!

When in Miami...
There are tons of great fairs and plenty of projects to check out while you're in Miami this year. Our staff and contributors wanted to give you the heads-up on a few things we think are definitely worth checking out. Curator Watch List: Anne Ellegood
We are currently putting together the Pacific Coast issue (NAP #97). Anne Ellegood, Senior Curator, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, did a terrific job selected 40 artists from over 1,000 that applied to the competition. You'll have to wait to find out who she selected from the region. But, when we asked her what other painters she would recommend to our readers, she names quite a few. So, check them out after the jump! And look for the Pacific Coast issue on the newsstands in December.

West Issue #96 Sneak Peak!
Today we received advanced copies of #96, the 2011 West Issue of New American Paintings! It is expected to hit newsstands and ship to subscribers in the next 1 to 2 weeks, so keep an eye out. It will be hard to miss the cover of this one...The juror for this fantastic issue was Cassandra Coblentz, Curator, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA).

Collaborative Arts: Sandow Birk & Elyse Pignolet
Husband and wife team Sandow Birk (NAP #73) and Elyse Pignolet are solo artists in their own right, but they also form a dynamic collaborative art aesthetic in ambitious projects ranging anywhere from large-scale woodblock print series, to painted ceramic murals, to hand-drawn maps. - Ellen Caldwell, LA Contributor

Fabrications with Jen Pack (NAP #73)
Jen Pack (NAP #73) deconstructs, reconstructs, sews, and stretches fabric onto frames and into large masses in a way that creates something at once familiar and yet also new. Her works resonate with viewers and remind them of a variety of other arts and images, creating a kind of cyclical “trialogue” – a dialogue between artist, art, viewer, and back.
From her nuanced and detailed stretched chiffon pieces to her large installation work with kite-like nylon, Pack’s work is both moving and provoking, aesthetically and mentally. – Ellen Caldwell, LA Contributor

Must-See Paintings Show: September
The art world comes alive again in September, as galleries reopen and collectors return from far flung locations. We reviewed upcoming September exhibitions at more than 400 galleries around the country, and there will be a lot of painting on view.
As is typical, many galleries are bringing out the big guns for the new season - from Agnes Martin at The Pace Gallery in New York to a well structured survey of Bay Area figurative painter, Nathan Oliveira, at John Berggruen Gallery in San Francisco. Among the shows opening by emerging artists, it is hard to ignore the trend towards abstract painting that has swept over the art world.
